Dangerous Women (Who Read)
Reading is knowledge.
This series is about Book Banning
2023-2025
Historically, women who engaged in reading were perceived as a threat to the patriarchal society. In this series, I utilize vintage 19th-century tintypes to weave a conversation between women from the past and those in the present. The books depicted in these images are recognized as feminist and deemed controversial. While some were published decades ago, others are contemporary. The books in these images have either been banned or challenged and removed from the shelves of libraries and schools. Book banning is on the rise. This represents a genuine threat not only to women but to society as a whole. To create these images I scan vintage 19th century tintypes creating a picture within a picture. The 19th century women (in black and white) are shown in a trompe l’oeil frame wearing their original clothing of their era. The same women (foreground in color, are digitally collaged to look modern with the book they are reading). I would like to believe that the women of the past are having a conversation. with their future sisters warning them to remember their fight, and don’t take the freedoms they fought for for granted.
