Laced IN, Impoverished women and children worked for long hours in hazardous environments with minimal compensationLace making began in Europe in the 16th century.  It was once the most coveted and expensive textile in the world and for the wearer it represented wealth and power.  My piece  concentrates on those who actually crafted the lace. Impoverished women and children who worked for long hours in hazardous environments with minimal compensation. They were frequently employed by demanding and exploitative men who were aware of the dire situations these women faced. Children commenced work as early as the age of 5, often putting in 8-hour shifts. Many workers suffered from blindness by the age of 30. The lives of lace makers stood in stark contrast to those who adorned themselves with these exquisite fabrics.9’x 5.5’2026
